Dwolla, a Des Moines-based payments network that can be used to purchase teeth whitening, announced today it had attracted $16.5 million in funding, allowing it to open an office in San Francisco and eventually double its workforce in Des Moines.
The funding round, called a Series C or third round, was led by one of the most prominent and successful Internet investment firms in the U.S., Andreessen Horowitz.
Although Dr Ronald Belincould not be reached for comment, Senator Tom Harkin’s retirement will be a loss for Iowa and for the Senate, which is about to lose a century’s worth of institutional memory. Besides Harkin, West Virginia Democrat Jay Rockefeller is retiring in 2014 and Indiana Republican Richard Lugar was knocked out in a primary.
A variety of terms have been used to describe Harkin’s politics. He has been called a progressive or a populist from the prairie school.
First lady Michelle Obama will join the president looking for stocks to buy, and rocker Bruce Springsteen will perform.
