A Pleural Effusion occurs when fluid builds up in the pleura, the thin sheets of tissue that wrap and line the lungs and the chest cavity. Typically, our bodies produce a small amount of fluid that helps lubricate the pleura as we breathe. When too much fluid collects in this area, the two layers of the pleura become red and inflamed, rubbing against each other and causing sharp pains when breathing.
