This show has much more to it then meets the surface.
There seems to be this Wizard of Oz underlying message within the show. Kate has everyone important in her life saved in her phone as a character from the Wizard of Oz, Leonard is the cowardly lion, her dad is the wizard, her brother is the scarecrow, Justin is the tin man and her stepmother is the wicked witch.
This says a lot about the characters without her having to say much at all. It is a smart way of showing each character, that many people will understand, which means she probably sees herself as Dorthy.
