The two recently published studies looked at whether there is a higher risk of blood clots in women taking birth control pills containing the progestin drospirenone when compared to similar women taking birth control pills containing a different progestin called levonorgestrel. These two new studies reported that there is a greater risk of VTE associated with birth control pills that contain drospirenone.

In the latest Johnson & Johnson case, DePuy said in a statement that it was recalling two products: the ASR XL Acetabular System, a hip socket used in traditional hip replacement, and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System, a partial hip replacement that involves placing a metal cap on the ball of the femur, a method intended to preserve more bone. The traditional implant has been available worldwide, and the resurfacing implant was approved for use in countries outside the United States.

In March 2010, DePuy first notified doctors in the United States of the high failure rate of the DePuy ASR Hip Implant system based upon the Australian Joint Replacement Registry data. However, DePuy did not issue a recall of the Depuy ASR Hip Implant device. Interestingly, months earlier, in late 2009, DePuy informed doctors that the company was discontinuing the sale of the DePuy ASR Hip Implant devices due to a decline in sales.

Patients who need their current implant removed will need to undergo revision surgery and will endure severe pain and physical limitations. DePuy has asked for access to patients' medical records so the company can compensate them for the cost of corrective surgery.

Lawsuits against Bayer may shed more light on the issue of blood clots in women who use drospirenone birth control. According to The Wall Street Journal (12/09/11), among court documents that were not included in the FDA's hearing—because lawyers did not submit them in time, the FDA says—is a report prepared by David A. Kessler, former FDA commissioner, alleging that Bayer did not notify the FDA of all cases of blood clots linked to drospirenone prior to FDA approval.
